The One They Call "Dingo"

So, I’ve received a few comments from folks varying from simply confusion, to amusement, to borderline unhappiness. Why? For the natural nickname we’ve given our wild animal Rosalie, little miss Dingo. Well, I figure it’s probably time to reach out and give some examples of her “Dingoness“.

First and foremost, the name stuck accidentally. I think “Hyena” is likely what both Matt and I were thinking when we said, “Hey! She’s like a wild animal that makes funny noises and she certainly looks like a Dingo!”. Well, the other day I did a little research on Google Image Search and…. She looks nothing like a Dingo. She looks like a Hyena and makes the strange noises (which we find absolutely adorable!!) like a hyena. For the first couple days after discovering this minor discrepancy, I didn’t have the heart to tell Matt that we’d made a naming mistake. But then I thought, what does it hurt? We already have “the Dingo Song” (modeled after the very popular childhood “Bingo” dog song, you know, “And Bingo was his namO!! B-I-N-G-O….), she seems to like the name and…. Well, so we misplaced our understanding of which wild dog she looks and acts like! So what! :)

She’s our little Dingo! Don’t get me wrong we still call her Rosalie… when she’s acting civilized! Fortunately she fits perfectly into our household by rarely letting that civilized side out! HAHA!!

Besides I think Dingos have better PR these days. Seems like the movie statement, “The Dingos ate my baby!!!” has long passed as a concern. On the other hand the PR agent for the hyena still has a lot of work to do!!

We love our Dingo and hope you do too!

I have always asked my kitty, Cujo, what pants he had on - Grumpy Pants, Purry Pants, Hungry Pants. It became Mr. Pants, then Pants. One unfortunate day, I turned it into "Panties" - he was horrified. But it stuck. And now he is Cujo Panties. Unusual name for a 16 lb cat, but it is all said with lots of love!

I have to admit a friend and I burst out laughing when we saw that you dubbed her "Dingo." We snickered loud and long that it was Not Respectful to such a ferocious beast as Rosalie.

Her cat, I should add, has dozens of nicknames in multiple languages. Not a single one is Properly Respectful. :-)

Don't you worry Rosalie, my humans call me "Beaker" (like from the muppets) cause I make similar noises. Pay them no attention - you just go on being your awesome little Tortie self!

    Purrs from your fellow Tortie,

I'm all for nicknames! My menagerie has so many between them, I doubt I could list them all (or remember them!)

Dare I say... "A Rosalie by any other name..."?

I was absolutely charmed when I saw that you referred to Rosalie as Dingo. We have a little dog we call a dingo, and it is all about what we love in her. Rosalie is a lucky little dingo, I must say.

I've found with my no longer itty bittys that their names morphed and expanded and contracted over time as their personalities developed. With that in mind, "Dingo" makes perfect sense as will any other names you may give her over time. Thanks so much for the blog. I do miss kittens.

I LOVE her nickname. My pets have always had slightly odd nicknames. So your little wild girl has an appropriate alt-name! She is lovely and we appreciate you sharing her and her bubba with us!

Awwh, I hope no one was genuinely unhappy over little Dingo's silly nickname! I find it adorable - isn't it sweet how cat nicknames just happen? D-I-NGO! Heee. For some reason I just can't help calling her Dingo-boots mentally.

My poor little Ziggy's nickname got shortened from Boo-Boo to the absolutely uncivilized Boobers. He responds to it, but grudgingly. If only he could get a good nickname, like his 'sister' (they grew up together) Zorro, a.k.a. Punkin Head.

Well, learn something new everyday! I thought she looked a little like a dingo.... and like you, had pictured in my mind what is actually a hyena.

Nicknames are a sign of affection anyway. Everyone who knows me knows I practically live for my cat, but he is called everything from sh**ty kitty (when he does a revenge poop outside the box) to preciousbabyboy to bubblehead to sweet pea.

hugs to you, matt, dingo, phyllis & renatta :-)

People are unhappy about Dingo? It's such a sweet nickname! Obviously this is already a cat that is being loved to itty bitty dingo bits. Rock on!

Still, my, she's a stunner, wild ways or no wild ways.

I call my cat all sorts of things, from "My Little Whale" to "Koza", which is Russian for "female goat".

Isn't it funny how those nicknames just happen? My mother had a kitty named Zelda who was so loving that she did head butts all the time. She then became known as Pusher, but her legal name remained Zelda. Then came Maggie whom my mother called Tiddly, but she remained Maggie on her driver's license all her days.
Love this blog. Hugs to you and Matt!
